Podyjí Park

Discover the wild jewel of Moravia

Podyji National Park is one of the most beautiful and wildest natural areas in the Czech Republic.

Although it is the smallest of the Czech national parks, this park offers an experience that will thrill you with its diverse landscape, rich biodiversity and historical significance. Podyjí is located along the Dyje River, which forms the border between the Czech Republic and Austria, and its charm lies in the wild river canyons, mystical forests and fragile steppes. This natural paradise, declared a national park in 1991, is like an open book that tells the stories of nature, history and culture. Come and discover the beauty of Podyjí, where nature reigns unchanged and where silence and tranquility rule the landscape.

A mosaic of wilderness and beauty

Dyje Valley – The best-preserved river canyon in the Czech Republic

Podyjí is known primarily for its diverse landscape, which includes both wild canyons and picturesque steppes and forests. The most important part of the park is the valley of the Dyje River, which stretches for 40 km. This canyon is the best-preserved river canyon in the Czech Republic, and its depth reaches up to 220 meters. Here you will see majestic rock walls, such as Vraní skála, which is one of the most famous views in the park. Steep slopes and stone seas give the landscape a mystical atmosphere that will engulf you with every step.

Fragile heaths and quiet pastures

On the eastern side of the park, there are steppe heaths, which are home to a variety of plants and animals, including rare orchids. This contrasts with deep forests and quiet pastures, creating a beautiful natural mosaic that changes with each season. Spring brings flowering heaths, summer invites you to walk along the river, and autumn envelops the landscape in gold and red tones.

Biodiversity at the border of worlds

A paradise for nature lovers

Podyjí is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts. The park is home to more than 70 protected species of plants and animals that cannot be found anywhere else. Among the most important plants is the endemic Hardegg cranesbill, which grows only in Podyjí and a few other places in Austria. The park also features rare species of orchids that appear in the spring.

Animals of the Dyje Valley – Birdsong and the rustling of leaves

Podyjí is also known for its rich fauna. The forests around the Dyje River are home to river otters, black storks and many other bird species that have become symbols of this region. The park also houses rare butterflies, such as the smoke-colored anemone, which is one of the rarest butterfly species in Europe. Every corner of Podyjí is full of life and sounds that create harmony between nature and man.

History in the Landscape – The Gift of the Iron Curtain

Podyjí as an unspoiled gem

Podyjí has retained its uniqueness thanks to the Iron Curtain period, when the entire area was under strict military control and the public was forbidden to enter the area. During this period, nature was given the chance to develop without human influence, which today provides enormous value for nature conservation. The landscape of Podyjí has developed into a form that would be difficult to find elsewhere in Europe.

Čížov – Historical Center of the Park

In Čížov, one of the main entry points to the park, there is a visitor center where you can learn more about the history of the park, its origins and the Iron Curtain era. The exhibition also includes examples of fortifications that remained at this site from the Cold War. The silence that remained here is its greatest charm today and gives the park a mysterious atmosphere.

What to experience in Podyjí

Hiking – Trails to Natural Wonders
